An Odd Coincidence

I was in the car this morning queueing to get just inside the “snow bound” city boundary for an hour. I was listening to The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and wondered when Billy Zantzinger may die. I wondered what Bob Dylan would say. For some reason I had a picture of him being told [...]

In Memorium

Dashed back from The Old’s on Sunday morning for a memorial service. An old chum (86 years old – twice my age) died in December from leukaemia. He was an artist and a Human Rights campaigner anda gentle soul. They’d had a quiet family woodland burial and then this civil service in the [...]

Solid Air

John Martyn appears to have died. This on the back of Dav[e]y Graham popping off late last year. What is the world coming to? Soon there will be no folkies left.

Old Fat Furry Catpuss

It is a sad day.

At my book group last week one of our number talked about being in Oliver Postgate’s house and seeing a small planet dangling from a string. it was the real thing. A home to a race of small aliens known as The Clangers. In the corner sat a carved wooden book [...]

David Gemmell

I was greatly saddened to get an email today with this news link.

Monsignor David Gemmell, a.k.a. Fr Davy Gemmell was a very strong influence on my life when I was growing up. A warm fun loving, generous hearted man with a kind word for everyone. He was solely responsible for persuading me to go to [...]

Death in a Cell

I got a call last night to tell me that Prisoner of Conscience Thet Win Aung had died that evening in jail in Mandalay. Crushing news.

I ran my Edinburgh Marathon in honour of Thet Win Aung. I received word on the grapevine that he knew of it and of our local Amnesty International groups campaign [...]

Bike

Wheeliebinland’s most famous resident died recently. The news announced yesterday that Roger “Syd” Barrett of Pink Floyd fame had made his final trip.

My earliest memories of Syd Barrett were from School. I borrowed Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Relics from a friend and played the records smooth. Soon everyone was listening to it. [...]

#6 Paddy Grady

Whilst I was in The Smoke I managed to download my email to my PDA and got the comment left by Diarmuid on an earlier post. Nothing to do with the post but he said Monsignor Patrick Grady had died. So there I was in a restaurant off Oxford Street and I was suddenly transported [...]

Glove on a Bus

I found it
Still warm
Curled in the shape
Of his hand

And there it lay
On the smooth seat
Cooling slowly
And transforming

By my stop
It had become
Just a glove
Found on a bus

Death of a Giant

John Peel is dead. Quite a shock really. John Peel was furniture in my house. 65 isn’t that old. After his Sheila had a stroke I guess he would have expected her to go first. It appears not. Poor fella.

So no more droll Radio 4 remarks to listen to on a Saturday morning whilst reading [...]
